Minted vs cast gold bars

How minted and cast gold bars are made, why their premiums differ, and which one suits you.

How each is made

A cast bar is poured into a mould and left to cool, which gives it a rougher, more individual surface. A minted bar is cut from rolled metal and struck, which gives it sharp edges and a polished finish, and it is often sealed in a card with an assay certificate.

Why the premium differs

Casting takes fewer steps, so cast bars often carry a lower premium, especially at larger sizes. Minted bars cost more to finish and package, and they dominate the small sizes.

Which to choose

The gold content is what you are paying for either way. Choose cast if you want the lowest premium at 100 g and above. Choose minted if you value the sealed packaging, or if you are buying a small size where cast is not offered.
